Of Seasons and Cycles, 2024, Deconstructed thread spools, felt, wax, on panel, 45x x 180 x 5 inches, Photo credit: Mario Gallucci

This work references the four-direction equilateral cross that is found in much Native American imagery and is part of many traditions worldwide. Beyond symbolizing the cardinal directions, it represents our connections to nature, to the changing cycles of seasons and life. The piece is constructed of sliced open spools of industrial thread and the spinal column of waxed felt strips act as a reference to stability. The act of cutting something apart down to its core, effectively destroying its original function, but then reforming it into a beautiful lush object reflects my interest in how things that are broken or disrupted can adapt and remain viable, sometimes more beautiful than before.
