Growing up in Oklahoma, I used to see coyote carcasses hanging on barbed wire fences. They served as prideful warnings to other coyotes and perhaps all other interlopers that the land was private property. The fence serves as a mark of ownership, a separating device, a destroyer of community. Life on this earth is a complex, interconnected network and we humans are the ultimate predators. I struggle with our hubris that we think we have dominion over other creatures and the environment. Every day we see the folly of this: fires we can’t put out, coastal homelands flooding, heat domes, dwindling species diversity.
